Discovered in 1848 by the chemist Nikolaus Wolfgang Fischer, this synthetic pigment was a breakthrough for artists. It was officially introduced as a commercial paint in 1852, quickly becoming a staple for watercolorists who valued its permanence over the fleeting natural alternatives of the era.

During the Victorian age, it became a symbol of innovation in chemical engineering. Because of its metallic origin as potassium cobaltinitrite, it offered a depth of color that natural earth pigments could not achieve, bridging the gap between traditional craft and modern science.
