The first recorded use of vanilla as a color name in English occurred in 1925. However, the substance itself originates from Mexico, where the Totonac people cultivated the vanilla orchid. Spanish explorers introduced the plant to Europe in the 1500s, but it remained a luxury commodity for centuries, influencing high-society aesthetics as a symbol of rarity and wealth.

In the art world, similar shades were achieved using Naples Yellow or light ochre mixed with lead white. During the Rococo period, these soft, buttery yellows became prominent in interior decor and fashion, representing a shift away from the heavy, dark palettes of the Baroque era toward a lighter, more whimsical atmosphere.

This color elicits a sense of tranquility and psychological warmth. Unlike vibrant yellows that can cause eye strain or anxiety, vanilla functions as a soothing presence that promotes serenity.
